Kitchen Refurbishment Q&A

Is it cost effective to replace Just the cabinet doors?

Question: Is it cost effective to replace just the cabinet doors?

Answer:  Not always.

Many homeowners across South London, South East London and all BR postcode areas in Kent assume that replacing only the kitchen cabinet doors will be much cheaper than installing a brand new kitchen.

In reality, this is often not the most cost-effective option.

Existing kitchen carcasses are rarely perfectly square or aligned, especially in older kitchens. This means new doors often require bespoke carpentry, hinge adjustments, filler panels and alignment work to ensure everything fits correctly.

Once labour and custom joinery costs are added, the total can come surprisingly close to the cost of a full new kitchen.

A recent project we completed in Blackheath is a perfect example, where retaining the existing Howdens carcasses and fitting new handleless doors ended up costing almost as much as a brand new kitchen due to the amount of bespoke work involved.

Question: When is replacing just the doors worth doing?

Answer:   Replacing doors can be worthwhile if your existing cabinets are in excellent condition, level, and compatible with the new style you want.

It works best where the update is purely cosmetic and very little carpentry work is required.

Question: What is usually better value?

Answer:  In many cases, a completely new kitchen offers better long-term value.

A new kitchen allows for perfectly aligned units, improved storage, modern fittings and fewer unforeseen labour costs.
