Tips for your New Bathroom, Wet room or Shower room Refurbishment / Renovation

JW McDonald Building Services have worked on a many shower installations in the Bromley and South London areas. We have new clients frequently asking for our bathroom fitter services on a shower room which needed a more cost effective wet room style finish.

The clients often ask if we could make a better space in the bathroom with separate shower. They also wanted to save money but wanted a wet room style bathroom so they asked if they could have a shower tray on floor.

This will save on in comparison to a wet room pan shower tray which will need the tanking process over the top. This method of tanking elevates the bathroom feel and cost at the same time.

This means that we will try to have the slim line shower tray on the floor and tile up to it but only having a 30mm shower tray edge shower when the floor is finished

PROS AND CONS OF THE SHOWER TRAY ON FLOOR

1) The completed look of the bathroom or shower room is very modern and stylish

2)When you are having the shower tray on the floor the tanking methods are not necessary to combat potential leaks

3) This method can speed up the completion of the project to save money on labour cost and materials.

CONS OF HAVING THE SHOWER TRAY ON THE FLOOR

1) The waste water run will have to go through the floor and if there is not enough space in the floor below the waste water will not drain away properly.

2) Shower trays can crack over time or the shower tray could have a hair line crack in the tray when delivered which will cause problems later on

3) The other problem which is most common is that most shower trays we have installed have been incorrectly stored over time and they have a bow in the tray. Even if the shower tray was stirred incorrectly when you have received it yourselves this will make installation difficult.

My Advice Below:

My advice on the subject of shower trays on the floor is that bowing the tray is the main issue. Most of the ones we have installed are bowed and unless this has been checked before the item has been sent out the delay on sending it back could loose you money due to waiting for a new one.

If you decide to keep it and install it most manufacturers ask you store the shower tray on a flat floor with some weight on the shower tray to get it flat again.
This will also take time so most clients say just install it anyway but this is not a simple task. Depending on how much the tray is bowed the shower enclosure or screen is glass, metal and flat.

This also means that you will maybe have a 5-15mm gap which is problematic in a shower. There are ways to try and counter these problems but my suggestion is to make the shower tray has been checked before delivery.

I would also suggest that if wanted to try and install a defective shower tray make sure the gap is no more than 5mm as silicone will help seal between the screen and tray

I hope this information will help you with your new bathroom, wet room, shower room installation or refurbishment.
