The art of having a very good tiled finish is in the preparation. The walls or floor should be as level and solid to work with as possible. If you are tiling onto any floors or walls check if the areas are level by using a straight piece of timber or a long level, this will help to find any high or low spots. Try to level out any imperfections by using plaster or bonding for the walls and a floor self-levelling compound for the floor. If the floor is just natural floor boards then we recommend you use a 9-12mm WPB ply and screw this down onto the floor using 30mm screws, this will help you not to hit any pipes below. If the walls are hollow in places, then we recommend that they are removed and rebuilt with render or bonding to a good finish.

When the area you are going to tile onto is level and solid to work with you should size out the room buy finding out how many square meters of tiles you will need. This can be worked out by taking the shortest distance which could be 3 meter then times this by the longest distance which could be 6 meters on the floor or wall. The total area works out to be 18 sqm using this method. When you have calculated how many sqm’s of tiles you need you should always allow 1-2 sqm for cutting tiles in half and waste in general, but always make sure you can take back any tile you don’t need for a refund.

When you have, the tiles check to see what size spacer’s you will need for the tiles you have bought. If you don’t know what size you should go for, we recommend 2-3mm spacers on the walls or 3-4mm spacers for the floor. The adhesive that you buy should be recommended by the tiller, we would recommend, ready mix adhesive for the walls and rapid self-mix for the floor. If the grout you are using is a light colour, then try and get a light colour adhesive and visa-versa to help stop the adhesive coming through the grout.

When the area is ready for tiling we recommend that you size out the tiling area by finding the straight point of the wall or floor. The best way to find you strait line on a wall is to use a level and mark a straight line as a plus sign on the wall. When you have done this, we recommend fixing a piece of timber to the horizontal line and use this as a base for the first row of tiles to be installed.

If you are tiling a bathroom you should always work off the bath first which will give you have the same affect and help you in many other ways. When you are sizing out the floor you must find your straight lines for a good finish, we recommend using a level and put it against the two legs of the door frame.

This is the best place to start tiling from on the floor and we would lay out as many tiles as you can to determine how the cut’s will affect the overall finish of the job and we also recommend this for the walls as well.

Here at JW McDonald Building Services Ltd we look at plastering quotes all the time for domestic properties. Most of our customers search for us on Google using search terms like “Plasterer South London” or “Plasterer” in Foresthill”or Bromley, Lewisham, etc

When you find our website we cover, Plastering, refurbishments, bathroom installations, kitchen renovations, walk in showers, tiling, electrical works. I mention this because some of our customers are looking to find the building company that covers other trades.

The last plastering job we just finished was based Catford SE6 that is near the Hither Green cemetery, or Downham Way BR3 area.

The project itself was a large front room that had the old polystyrene tiles that are a fire hazard so the client removed them. This left them with a rough finish on the ceiling and above the picture rail the had some old plaster artex.

Part of the problem with some large front room ceilings is that we have to set up large platforms & ban-stands so we can plaster the ceiling because normal ladders will not work. We did not need to hire the plastering platforms because most established plasterers have this type of equipment for their plastering and refurbishment business.

The second part of the job was to re-plaster the bathroom ceiling and one wall. This was part of there remodeling works for the bathroom to finish re-decorating

This job took two days in total this is including the sheeting out of the floors and putting down large tarpaulins to stop the carpets from getting wet.

Here at JW McDonald Building Services Ltd we specialise in Kitchen & Bathroom refurbishments. The last project we completed was based in the Sydenham SE26, near Crystal Palace park SE19 area where we have seen a lot of property prices rise, so this is a frequent area for us to work in.

This Kitchen & Bathroom refurbishment consisted of us removing the old Kitchen & Bathroom but it revealed that all the walls in these two rooms were disintegrating and needed rebuilding. Here at JW McDonald Building Services Ltd, we look at bathroom remodelling as a way of moving your bathroom to a new and inviting place in your home. We can look at this from a standpoint of adding value to your property as well as the new bathroom install.

The new bathroom renovation should consist of good plumbing or pipework and making sure that there is very good cost effective heating service. All of our bathroom remodelling ideas should start with what works for your property/home at this moment, because some people need shower installations as well as a new bathroom.

If you need a shower and a bath, then we need to look at the heating & plumbing as a whole. Bathroom remodelling starts with an efficient gas or electric boiler, which can give you instant hot and cold water as well as efficient heating. When you have tackled this area of the home we can start to look at how we can make the new bathroom / walk in shower model come alive.

We can now start to look at the plumbing or pipe to make sure you are getting the most out of what is going on under the floorboards. We always suggest that you should have as much pipe work in 22mm copper or plastic pipe were possible to carry the most amount of pressure to the new bathroom. From the bath, we would say you should have all the shower, sink & toilet coming of 15mm copper pipe, you can use plastic pipe under the floor because it will not be seen but above ground, it should be in copper.

The good thing to remember is always, try to re-new the plastic waste pipe, which is also hidden under the floorboards and water test them regularly to test for leaks. We would also recommend that after the pipe is run and all the baller fix valves are set and all the pipe work should be left under pressure and on test for at least 24 hours.

The bath can now be set in place so you can work out the tiling or if it’s a walk in shower it will just be a case of working out were all the cut tiles will end up, we call this sizing out a room. The bathroom ideas should start to take shape after this as there are only the bathroom / shower fittings left to install.
